Welcome to the Institute of Biology
Because there are currently only
a few of these pages available in english, contact the
Managing
Director of the institute or visit the international
messageboard for further questions!
The Institute of Biology has currently approximately 400
students aiming at a diploma or "staatsexamen"
degree. A bachelor curriculum in biology will probably
be established by 2002. With 12 professors and approx.
25 persons of scientific personell, the institute is rather
small and grants intensive and personal supervision, tutoring
and mentoring of students. The units (laboratories) of
Animal Physiology/Neurophysiology, Biochemistry, Botany,
Cell Biology/Human Biology, Didactics in Biology, Ecology,
Genetics, Microbiology, Plant Physiology and Zoology/Developmental
Biology cover the entire field of biology. Third-year-students
(after the "vordiplom") may choose between the
following specializations: molecular biology, physiology,
biodiversity, and nanobiology with a broad spectrum of
courses offered not only at Kassel University but also
in neighbouring institutions like e.g. the Kassel City
Hospital. A new interdisciplinary Masters curriculum (Biology,
Chemistry and Physics) will be started in 2002. In the
frame of university partnerships or individual cooperations,
it is possible to do part of the studies in other countries.
A specialty of the diploma curriculum in Kassel are practical
courses in life science companies which allow for insights
into applied research and contacts for future empoyment
opportunities.
In research, molecular methods and advanced methods of
microscopy but also electrophysiological projects are
established. At the same time, field biology (especially
pursued by the botany and ecology groups) is combined
with molecular biology. Animal house, green house, cell
culture lab, isotope lab, DNA sequencing, confocal-, electron-
and scanning force microscopy are available to all units
as central facilities. A new interdisciplinary research
focus with participating groups from biology, physics
and chemistry will be set up in the "Center for Interdisciplinary
Nanostructure Science and Technology" (CINSaT) in
2002. Within this center, molecular interactions of single
molecules are investigated and biophysical methods are
being applied on the cellular and subcellular scale. |
